スポーツで使われる “qualifying match” の意味とは？
FIFA の YouTube チャンネルをチェックしていると、各国チームの紹介映像がアップされているのを発見しました。
日本のもあったので、さっそく観てみると、ナレーターが “They missed the ticket for USA in ’94 after failing to beat Iraq in the final qualifying match. (5:43)” と言っていました。
“qualifying match” は「予選試合」という意味です。“qualify” という単語は、スポーツで使われると「予選を通過する」という意味になるんですね！
qualify | Longman Dictionary
1. to have the right to have or do something, or to give someone this right
2. to pass an examination or finish a course of study that you need in order to do something
3. to have all the necessary qualities to be considered to be a particular thing
4. if something qualifies you to do something, you have the necessary skills, knowledge, ability etc to do it
5. to reach the necessary standard to enter or continue in a competition or sports event
6. to add to something that has already been said, in order to limit its effect or meaning
7. if a word or phrase qualifies another word or phrase, it limits or adds to the meaning of it（私は “qualify” と言えば「資格を得る」という意味くらいしか知りませんでしたが、他にも意味があったんですね・・・！）
というわけで、ナレーターはこう言っていたのでした。

（日本代表は1994年のアメリカワールドカップ最終予選試合でイラクを倒せず、本試合出場を逃した。）
いわゆる、「ドーハの悲劇（Agony of Doha）」と呼ばれる事件です。
