アメリカで出産する時に覚えておきたい英単語
アメリカで両親学級を受けた時に、知らない英単語をたくさん学んだので、その中でも特に「アメリカで出産するなら知っておきたい」英単語をまとめてみました。
contraction
“contraction” は「陣痛」という意味です。陣痛アプリをダウンロードする時にも、”contraction” で検索すればたくさん見つかります。ちなみに陣痛アプリでアメリカで最も人気があるのは “contraction timer” だそうです。
bloody show
「おしるし」は英語で “bloody show” または “show” と言います。
show: appearance of blood forerunning labor or menstruation
（”menstruation” は「月経」という意味です。このように、生理の時にも使われます。）
labor
“labor” は「分娩」という意味で、”She’s in labor.（彼女は分娩中です）” というような文脈でよく使われます。
labor (BIRTH): the last stage of pregnancy when the muscles of the uterus start to push the baby out of the body, usually lasting until the baby appears
（”uterus” は「子宮」という意味です。）
deliver
“deliver” は「産む」という意味です。”She delivered a baby boy!（男の子を産みました！）” というような文脈で使われます。また、「分娩室」は “delivery room”、「自然分娩」は “natural delivery” と言います。
deliver (GIVE BIRTH): to give birth to a baby, or to help someone do this
（”give birth to” も「〜を産む」という意味で、よく使われる表現です！）
C-section
“C-section” は “cesarean section” の略で、「帝王切開」という意味です。
cesarean (section): an operation on a woman to allow the birth of her child through a cut made in her abdomen
（”abdomen” は「腹部」という意味です。）
epidural
“epidural” は「硬膜外麻酔」と言います。無痛分娩の時に一般的に使われます。
epidural: an anaesthetic (= a substance that stops you feeling pain) that is put into the nerves in a person’s lower back with a special needle
（背中の下あたりの神経に注入される麻酔です。）
cervix
“cervix” は「子宮口」という意味です。”Her cervix is fully dilated.（子宮口が完全に開きました）” というような文脈で使われます。
cervix: the narrow, lower part of a woman’s uterus
（「子宮」と「子宮口」は全く単語が異なるんですね。）
umbilical cord
“umbilical cord” は「へその緒」という意味です。単に “cord” と言われることもあります。
umbilical cord: the tube that connects a baby to its mother before birth and carries oxygen and food to it
ちなみにアメリカではへその緒はすぐに取ってしまうので、日本のしきたりにしたがってへその緒を保存する場合は必ず事前にバースプランなどを通じて伝えておく必要があります。私もへその緒は残してもらう予定です！
