戦争に関する文脈で使われる “veteran” や “vet” の意味とは？
先日、クリント・イーストウッド監督の最新作『アメリカン・スナイパー』を観ました。
その後、いろいろ関連記事を見ていると、ワシントンポスト誌の記事が目に留まったので、読んでみました。
すると、”veteran” という単語を何度も目にしました。
Yet the troubling connection between war veterans, mental illness and acts of violence is persistent.
中には “vet” と表記されているところもありました。
“More than ever before, there’s a recognition that these issues can have a profound effect on behavior and are profoundly affecting men and women who have no criminal history and no history of violence,” Deutsch said of vets with PTSD.
“veteran” は、戦争にまつわる文脈では「退役軍人」や「兵役経験者」という意味で使われることが多いです。”vet” と短く表記されることもあります。
1. someone who has been a soldier, sailor etc in a war
2. someone who has had a lot of experience of a particular activity（2. は「経験豊富な人」という意味で、日本語でも「ベテラン」と言いますね！）
つまり冒頭の文章はそれぞれこう書かれていたのでした。

（しかし退役軍人と精神病、暴力行為の関係性は根強い。）
