スコットランドの独立投票のニュースで耳にした “turnout” の意味とは？
9月18日に、イギリスからの分離独立を問う住民投票を実施したスコットランド。そのニュースを見ていると、”turnout” という単語を何度も耳にしました。
ウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル紙の以下の映像でも、レポーターが “He went on to say that 86% turnout is one of the highest in the democratic world for any election or referendum in history.”（0:58）と言っていました。
“turnout” は投票に使われると、「投票率」という意味になります。

2. the number of people who go to a party, meeting, or other organized event
3. [American English] a place at the side of a narrow road where cars can wait to let others pass（2. のようにパーティーや会議に使われると、「人出」「参加者数」という意味にもなるんですね！）
つまり、ナレーターはこう言っていたのでした。

（彼は続けて、投票率86％というのはこれまでの民主主義世界における選挙や住民投票の中で最も高い投票率の一つだと話した。）
ちなみに BBC の発表によると、正式な投票率は84.6%とのこと。これまでのスコットランド全体における投票の中で最も高い投票率だったようです。
