知らない人への呼びかけに使われる “sir” “ma’am” の意味とは？
街を歩いていると、ホームレスの人に “Excuse me, ma’am, can you give me some change?” と話しかけられました。
“ma’am” は、”madam” の省略形です。

男性は “sir”
ちなみに男性に対しては、”sir” が使われます。

つまり、ホームレスは知らない私にこう話しかけていたのでした。
Excuse me, ma’am, can you give me some change?
（すみません、小銭をくれませんか？）
路上ではよくこんなふうにホームレスが物乞いをしています。
軍隊でも使われる “sir”
“sir” は軍隊でも使われます。先日観に行った映画『オール・ユー・ニード・イズ・キル』でも、トム・クルーズさんが “Can I help you, sir?” と言われていました。
ちなみに、日本語字幕版では「どうしたんだ？」（0:24）となっていました！
