2013年度ワード・オブ・ザ・イヤー発表！「自分撮り」は英語で何と言う？
日本では毎年流行語大賞が発表されますが、英語圏でも毎年 “Word of the Year” が発表されます。どこが発表するかというと、オックスフォード大学出版局（Oxford University Press）が刊行する辞書界の重鎮、オックスフォード英語辞典（Oxford Dictionaries）。

さっそく、公式ブログの発表記事『The Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year 2013 is… | OxfordWords blog』を読んでみたところ、、

ポイント
“selfie” は「自分撮り」という意味です。
selfie: [informal] a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website
（特に、スマートフォンやウェブカメラで自分撮りして SNS にアップする写真のことを指すみたいです！）
補足
というわけで、オックスフォード英語辞典のブログ記事によると、例年 “Word of the Year” については意見が分かれるそうですが、今年は全会一致で “selfie” が選ばれたそう。別にこの言葉は新語ではありませんが、必ずしも新語が “word of the year” に選ばれる必要はないみたいです。
However, it does need to demonstrate some kind of prominence over the preceding year or so and selfie certainly fits the bill. It seems like everyone who is anyone has posted a selfie somewhere on the Internet. If it is good enough for the Obamas or The Pope, then it is good enough for Word of the Year.

オックスフォード英語辞典の調査によると、ネット上で初めて “selfie” という言葉が使われたのは2002年のこと。オーストラリアのネット掲示板に上げられた以下の投稿に登場しています。

“Um, drunk at a mates 21st, I tripped ofer [sic] and landed lip first (with front teeth coming a very close second) on a set of steps. I had a hole about 1cm long right through my bottom lip. ただし、誰もが使うようになったのはここ数年のことだとか。元記事にはグラフも載っていますが、今年1年だけでも “selfie” という言葉の使用量が圧倒的に増えています。
Early evidence for the term show a variant spelling with a –y ending, but the –ie form is vastly more common today and has become the accepted spelling of the word. It could be argued that the use of the -ie suffix helps to turn an essentially narcissistic enterprise into something rather more endearing. It also provides a tie-in with the word’s seemingly Australian origins, as Australian English has something of a penchant for -ie words – barbie for barbecue, firie for firefighter, tinnie for a can of beer, to name just three.

オーストラリアではバーベキューのことを “barbie”、消防員のことを “firie”、缶ビールのことを “tinnie” と言ったりすることを知りませんでした！
ちなみに、”selfie” にはさまざまな活用形（？）もあるそうです。たとえば、自分の髪形を撮影したものは “helfie”、自分の後ろ姿を映したものは “belfie”、仕事着姿を映したものは “welfie”、そして酔っぱらった姿を映したものは “drelfie” などと言うそう。
