中東呼吸器症候群（MERS）に関する記事で目にした “contagious” の意味とは？
中東呼吸器症候群（MERS: Middle East Respiratory Syndrome）に関するニュースを目にするので、いろいろ記事をチェックしていたところ、” contagious” という単語を何度も目にしました。以下のニューヨーク・タイムズ紙の記事『MERS Virus’s Path: One Man, Many South Korean Hospitals（MERS のウイルス感染路：一人の患者と、多くの韓国の病院）』にも2回出てきました。

This is a very Korean thing, and I think this is not a good situation when we have a new contagious virus breaking out.
“contagious” は「伝染性の」という意味です。

つまり冒頭の2文はこう書かれていたのでした。

ここアメリカでも少しずつ MERS に対する警戒が高まっていて、アメリカ疾病予防管理センター（CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention）も医療現場に警告を発しています。アメリカでは昨年2名の感染が報告されましたが、現在は両名とも回復。いずれも医療従事者で、サウジアラビアで感染したそうです。

アトランティック誌の記事によると、個人でできる最大の予防法はやはり手洗いとのこと。
Rigorous hygiene practices—hand-washing with soap and warm water, especially—are the best way for individuals to protect themselves. Health officials are also reminding people to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth.
（厳格な衛生管理 — 特に石鹸とお湯での手洗い — が個人でできる一番の予防法だ。衛生当局は目や鼻、口などに触れるのを避けることに関しても再認識を促している。）

このアトランティック誌の記事によると、MERS は2003年に猛威をふるった重症急性呼吸器症候群（SARS: Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome）ほど感染度は高くないみたいですが、これ以上拡大しないことを祈りたいです。
ちなみに、感染症の恐怖とパニックを描いたスティーブン・ソダーバーグ監督の映画『コンテイジョン』（2011）がありましたが、“contagion” は “contagious” の名詞形です！
