インフルエンザ予防の記事で目にした「get vaccinated」の意味とは？

先週、両親とスカイプをしたら父親が風邪をひいていましたが、アメリカでも今年はインフルエンザがいつになく流行しているようです。幸い私もジェガーさんもまだ今季は風邪をひいていませんが、ニュースが気になったので、インフルエンザに関する記事を読んでみました。

すると、”get vaccinated” という表現が何回か目につきました。

If not, it’s never too soon to get prepared and not too late to get vaccinated against one of the most notorious and common winter maladies.

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated.

They should still get vaccinated, but remember that when they do, it helps to keep them safe too.

Get vaccinated.

ポイント

“get vaccinated” は「予防接種を受ける」という意味です。

補足

というわけで、記事では再三「予防接種受けや」ということが繰り返されていたのですが、特に予防接種を受ける必要があるのは、お年寄り、他に病気などのある人、妊婦さん、子ども、とのこと。

一般的にワクチンの効果は意外に低く、59%くらいやそうですが、しないよりはましです。ただ、7歳以下の子どもにとっては、鼻からシュッとするスプレー型ワクチンで83%に確率が上がるので、かなり効果はあるようです。

You may have heard about a new study on flu vaccines. It found that the flu vaccine doesn’t work as well as we thought or would like. However it still offers considerable protection. In adults ages 18-65 the benefits of the flu shot vary year by year, but on average the vaccine is 59 percent protective. For children the story is better. For those younger than seven the nasal spray vaccine is 83 percent protective.

一方、お年寄りには最も効果が薄いそう。でも、やはりしないよりはましです。

Unfortunately, the vaccine works least well in the elderly, the group at greatest risk of severe infection. They should still get vaccinated, but remember that when they do, it helps to keep them safe too. Clearly, we need better vaccines, but it’s still a really good idea to get vaccinated. There is also good news for kids — the nasal spray vaccine works great and there is no needle!

記事は最後に、普通の風邪（cold）とインフルエンザの見分け方についても触れていました。インフルエンザの場合は高熱（high fever）が出たり、頭痛（headache）や疲労感（fatigue）があったり、咳（cough）やのどの痛み（sore throat）、全身の痛み（body aches）があります。下痢（diarrhea）や嘔吐（vomiting）がある場合もあります（特に子ども）。これらの症状が出たら、仕事に行っては行けません。他人に感染させてしまうからです。

How do you know if you have the flu or just a bad cold? Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly and frequently and include high fever, headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and body aches. Some people, particularly children, may have diarrhea and vomiting. If you have these symptoms, do not come to work. The last thing you really want to do is infect others.

アドバイスについては、よく言われていることではありますが、他に病気などのある人は早めに主治医に連絡して抗ウイルス薬（antiviral drug）の処方について聞く、熱が下がるまで最低24時間は家にいる、咳やくしゃみをした後は特に手をきれいに洗って頻繁に消毒する、水分をたくさん取る、などが挙がっていました。

If you have underlying medical problems, call your doctor early in the illness to see if they want to prescribe an antiviral drug.

Stay home until your fever has been gone for at least 24 hours. That will cut down on the number of people to whom you might give it.

Cover your coughs and sneezes.

Keep your hands clean — use soap and water or hand sanitizer frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing.

Drink plenty of liquids!

My biggest advice to you is this: The best approach to the flu is to not get it and not share it. Get vaccinated. Stay home if you’re sick.

ちなみに ABC News の記事『City Under Flu Crisis: 48 Hours in Boston’s Massive Flu Outbreak』（2013年1月）によると、ボストンは今季インフルエンザの症例が750件報告されており、これは昨年の70件のおよそ10倍に相当するそう。

There have been more than 750 confirmed flu cases so far this season in Boston, more than 10 times the 70 cases from this time last year.

またニューヨーク・タイムズ紙の記事『Getting Through the Flu Season』（2013年1月）によると、ニューヨークでも衛生局担当者が先週「インフルエンザ関連の病気が流行レベルに達した」と発表し、ニューヨーク州のアンドリュー・クオモ知事が「緊急事態宣言」をしはりました。ニューヨーク州では、記事の出ている1/14（月）時点で19,000件の症例が報告されています（前年は4,400件）。

New York City health officials said last week that flu-related illnesses had reached epidemic levels, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state public health emergency to cope with “the worst flu season since at least 2009.” He said that some 19,000 cases had been reported so far. Last year 4,400 cases were confirmed by laboratory tests.
