嗜好品としての大麻（マリファナ）合法化のニュースで目にした「pot」の意味とは？
先週の大統領選に合わせ、各州でもそれぞれ選挙および住民投票が行われたのですが、私のいる州では、2つの大きな法案が注目を集めていました。
1つ目は、同性婚の是非を問う住民投票。ワシントン州では昨年、同性婚を認める法案が可決したのですが、その後反対派が署名を集め、住民投票をすることが決まっていました。結果は、僅差で支持派が反対派を上回り、合法化が正式に決定。来月6日に発効します。

もう1つは、嗜好品としての大麻（マリファナ）所持の合法化に関する住民投票。なんと、こちらも賛成多数で可決しました。コロラド州とともに、全米初です。
全国ニュースにもなっていたので、ロイター通信の記事を読んでみました。すると、”pot” という表現が何度か目に付きました。

ポイント
“pot” は俗語で「大麻」（marijuana, cannabis）という意味です。

（たくさん意味があるように見えますが、日本語で「ポット」と言うものも多いですね！ちなみに 8. の “potbelly” は「太鼓腹」という意味です。）
他には “weed” という表現もよく使われていて、映画などを観ていると、”joint”（大麻のタバコ）という言葉もよく出てきます。
補足
というわけで今回の合法化により、両州では21歳以上から1オンス（28.5グラム）を購入できるようになります。アルコール販売と同じように、州の認可を受けている店で販売・課税されるようになるんですね・・・！
Under the recreational marijuana measures in Colorado and Washington, personal possession of up to an ounce (28.5 grams) of marijuana would be legal for anyone at least 21 years of age. They also will permit cannabis to be legally sold and taxed at state-licensed stores in a system modeled after a regime many states have in place for alcohol sales.
また、コロラド州では大麻を1人6株まで栽培できるようになります。
私が気になったのは、大麻を合法化することによってどのような利点があるのかということなのですが、それについても記事に書かれていました。
まずは、1930年代の禁酒法撤廃によって組織犯罪による密造酒をなくすことができたように、法的措置の手間を省いたり、ドラッグのカルテルに対抗したりすることが期待されているみたいです。
They also argue that ending pot possession prosecutions would free up strained law enforcement resources and strike a blow against drug cartels, much as repealing alcohol prohibition in the 1930s crushed bootlegging by organized crime.
あとは、税収入。CNN Money の記事『Marijuana legalization passes in Colorado, Washington』によると、ワシントン州では3回にわたって25%ずつ税がかけられることになるようです。生産者が製造加工業者に売る時、そこから小売業者に売り渡される時、そして消費者が購入する時です。
Analysts had projected the Washington voters would approve their legalization ballot, because it proposes a heavy tax for marijuana that made the proposal attractive to budget hawks. The Washington initiative calls for a 25% tax rate imposed on the product three times: When the grower sells it to the processor, when the processor sells it to the retailer, and when the retailer sells it to the customer.
ただし、連邦法（federal laws）では依然、当麻所持は違法となっているので、この法案がすんなり施行されるかどうかはまだわかりません。
ちなみに、医療目的で大麻を所持・使用することを認めている州は現在、アラスカ州、アリゾナ州、カリフォルニア州、コロラド州、コネチカット州、コロンビア特別区（ワシントン DC）、デラウェア州、ハワイ州、メイン州、マサチューセッツ州、ミシガン州、モンタナ州、ネバダ州、ニュージャージー州、ニューメキシコ州、オレゴン州、ロードアイランド州、バーモント州、ワシントン州の全18州 & 1地区。
ちょっと前までアパートで向かいに住んでいたおばあちゃんも、医療目的でマリファナを使用していたらしく、家に帰ってくるとマリファナのにおいが廊下にまで漂っていることがよくありました。
私のいる州、現在はコーヒーのメッカと言われていますが、法案が施行されたら今度はマリファナのメッカになるのでしょうか・・・
ちなみに、日本の大麻取締法には日本国民の国外犯処罰規定があるため、日本人がこちらでマリファナを所持するのは同法違反となります！
